Hello, Possibility Seekers!
Welcome back to “Possibilities with Monique de Maio.” This episode is particularly special as I had the pleasure of hosting the incredible Jen Faherty. If you haven’t listened yet, you’re in for a treat, but for those who prefer to read, I’ve got you covered.
Jen Faherty, a seasoned financial planner and certified life coach, shared a deeply personal journey on the podcast—an odyssey of navigating internal narratives and societal expectations to unearth her true calling. Raised in an immigrant household with aspirations as high as the sky, Jen’s path was significantly shaped by cultural and familial expectations. However, what unfolded is a testament to the transformative power of self-awareness, resilience, and embracing authenticity.
Navigating Cultural and Familial Expectations
Jen’s childhood was marked by the pursuit of success, a success defined by her culture and parents. The weight of these expectations influenced many of her decisions, despite achieving professional success. However, beneath the surface, she often found herself questioning whether these choices aligned with her true desires.
The Art of “Ping-Ponging”
Jen’s pivotal moments came in the form of what she eloquently terms “ping-ponging” between externally motivated decisions and those aligned with her internal compass. Recognizing that true fulfillment lay in listening to her inner wisdom, she learned the importance of trusting herself to make choices that might deviate from societal norms.
Breaking Free from Linear Paths
Jen’s journey taught her the value of self-awareness and the ability to pivot when something doesn’t feel right. Her career path, as she describes it, is nonlinear. She encourages others to break free from the belief that there is only one purpose or one “right” path to success. Instead, she urges everyone to tap into their inner wisdom and trust the process of self-discovery, even if it takes time.
Self-Compassion and Embracing the Journey
Reflecting on her evolution, Jen emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and grace. She wishes she had been less self-critical and allowed herself to make mistakes along the way. Jen sees her career as an upward spiral, each experience building upon the last, leading her closer to her true purpose.
Living Unapologetically Authentic
Now, Jen lives a life unapologetically authentic, free from the shackles of external approval. Her hope is that her three adult children will learn the lesson of self-trust and the importance of staying true to their authentic selves early on in life. Jen Faherty’s story is explored in even greater detail in chapter 5 of my book, “The 7 Secrets to Creating a Life You Love: A Practical Guide for Women in Leadership.” Her insights and journey contribute to the collective wisdom shared in the book, making it a must-read for those navigating their unique paths to fulfillment.
Jen’s inspiring journey serves as a powerful reminder that the path to success and fulfillment is not always linear. By listening to our inner wisdom, questioning external narratives, and trusting the process of self-discovery, we can break free from societal expectations and forge our own unique and meaningful path.
